RF Microneedling: How It Differs from Traditional Microneedling

Traditional microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that treats one of the main causes of wrinkles and fine lines: decreased collagen production. After your 20s, your body doesn’t produce as much collagen as it used to, causing your skin to lose some of its firmness and volume.

Microneedling has become one of the preferred treatments for boosting collagen production, but now there’s an even more effective option. RF microneedling treatments enhance all of the benefits of the traditional procedure, offering even better results. Keep reading to learn more about RF microneedling.

What Is RF Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling uses tiny needles, just as traditional microneedling does, to create microscopic wounds, or microchannels, in the treatment area. These wounds are not large enough to damage healthy tissue, but they do stimulate your body’s healing process to create new skin that’s healthier and firmer.

One additional benefit that RF microneedling offers is its ability to apply radiofrequency energy to the little wounds. The needles we use release radiofrequency energy into the microchannels, causing more significant punctures but also intensifying the healing process. The waves reach deeper into your skin to treat more dermal layers.

RF energy provides the exact level of heat you need to target the skin concerns you have. Some of the most common issues RF microneedling treatments can help with include:

Wrinkles
Fine lines
Stretch marks
Large pores
Hyperpigmentation
Sagging skin
Cellulite
Scars
Hyperhidrosis

RF microneedling is particularly helpful as an acne scar treatment for patients of all skin types.

The best candidates for RF microneedling are people who have early signs of aging, who are in good overall health, and who have realistic expectations.

If you have received an Accutane treatment in the past six months, have a history of keloid scars or poor wound healing, have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant, or have a skin condition like psoriasis, you may not be a good candidate. We will look for alternative treatments to help you.

RF Microneedling Benefits

One of the most important RF microneedling benefits is that it is a minimally invasive procedure. This means there’s little to no downtime, and you can get back to your life without going through a long recovery process.

Because RF microneedling uses energy waves, we can provide the exact heat level you need to stimulate the most collagen production. It’s a procedure that can reach deeper into your skin layers than traditional microneedling to give you more potent results.

Preparing for RF Microneedling Treatments

The process starts with a consultation at our clinic. We will require your full medical history as well as a list of any medications or supplements you take. You should let us know if you have received Accutane treatments in the past months.

During this consultation, we can also take pictures of your face so we can offer before and after comparisons. We will carefully assess the treatment areas to determine the best procedure for you.

To help you prepare for RF microneedling, we ask that you stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements. These can be:

Ibuprofen
Aspirin
Fish oil
Vitamin E
St. John’s Wort
Ginkgo biloba

We also recommend that you stop drinking alcohol for a few days before the procedure and that you avoid cosmetic products that contain salicylic acid. You also want to avoid exfoliants and other products that make your skin more sensitive. Don’t get a lot of sun without protecting your skin.

If you need to shave, do so the day before your appointment.

During the Appointment

On the day of your RF microneedling treatment, don’t wear makeup, lotions, creams, or even sunscreen. We will wash your face and apply a topical anesthetic. Generally, we wait about an hour for the numbing cream to take effect.
Once we begin the procedure, the microneedles will start making minuscule wounds on the skin while the tips of the needles release radiofrequency waves. We’ll apply a growth solution that encourages cell regeneration.
The actual procedure can take from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the treatment area. You can go home right after the procedure.

RF Microneedling Aftercare

To help you get the best results, we recommend that you apply ice packs for the rest of the day after your procedure. For several weeks after your treatment, wear sunscreen even if the day is cloudy.

We may prescribe antibiotic creams or emollients, so make sure to take them exactly as we recommend. You also want to use only gentle cleansers after RF microneedling, so wait a few weeks before exfoliants or other abrasive options.
Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup.

Most people need at least four RF microneedling sessions, which we can schedule every three to eight weeks so that your skin can heal between treatments. You can expect to start seeing results three to six months after your treatments, and those results should last up to a year. After that year, you can have touch-up sessions.
