How Often Should You Get Microneedling Treatments?

First impressions are important, so how microneedling treatment will help you to be sure that your first impressions are spot-on every time. But that may be difficult to do if you aren’t completely confident in your skin. If you feel like your skin has seen better days, then it might be time to find a treatment that can put your skin – and your first impression – on the right track. At Impressions Skin Solutions, we know one of the best skin rejuvenation solutions is microneedling treatment.

How Often Should You do Microneedling Treatments?

As a general rule of thumb, microneedling treatment can be safely done about once a month or every 4 to 6 weeks. This is the frequency that works best for the majority of patients of all skin types, but some patients find that microneedling treatment more or less frequently than this range works best for their skin and their aesthetic goals.

We will be happy to help you determine the best frequency for your treatments so you can get the most benefit for your skin health – and your beauty.

First Round of Treatments

If it’s your first time with this treatment, then you’re going to be in for a “round” a treatments that take place closer together than your regular treatments will in the future.

The first round of treatments is used to kick-start your treatment so you can get the best results quickly. For most patients, this means 2 to 3 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart.

Treatments to Maintain Results

After your first round of treatment is completed and you have obtained your desired results, all subsequent appointments will be used to maintain these results.

Because the results of this treatment build gradually, you will be able to have more time between your regular maintenance appointments than your first round. Many patients opt to have regular treatments every 6 to 8 weeks for this purpose.

Why Does the Time Between Treatments Matter?

The time between your treatment appointments matters because of the nature of this treatment. The average turnover time for dead skin cells and healing is about 3 to 4 weeks for most people. Your cell turnover is determined by your age and genetics, which means younger patients may heal faster and older patients might require more time between treatments.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling is a diverse, minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment that is used to treat a variety of superficial skin concerns, including anti-aging, scar reduction, and general skin health. But how does it work?

This treatment is performed with a device that makes a series of tiny punctures in the surface of the skin, not unlike being pricked by a needle. But instead of getting the Sleeping Beauty treatment from these needles, a well-done microneedling treatment can give your skin the Cinderella make-over it needs.

Why Micro Injuries Are Key

Micro injuries are microscopic wounds on the skin surface that penetrate to the sub-dermal layers. They don’t hurt you, but they do stimulate some amazing effects.

The main principle behind this treatment is to create controlled injuries to the skin to stimulate the body’s natural regenerative ability. Your skin is made up of several structural proteins, including collagen, that produces in greater number when the skin is injured.

The micro injuries speed up skin cell turnover, which means you shed dead skin cells faster for a healthy glow as you heal.

What Are Results Like?

The results of this treatment are reliable and predictable. Regardless of your age or skin condition, you can be certain that you will experience the desired results. Let’s break results down by category:

For Anti-Aging

Common aging concerns are increased skin laxity, dark spots, sun damage, brown spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. This treatment easily addresses all of these superficial skin concerns by aiding skin cell turnover and stimulating the production of skin-supporting proteins.

This is particularly true for collagen and elastin, which are both the main culprits of skin laxity and wrinkle formation when the production of these proteins slows along with aging.

For Scar Reduction

Both injury scars and acne scars can be corrected by this treatment. The majority of scars on the skin surface are caused by an over-compensation of collagen produced during wound healing, which is produced too rapidly when the skin is still inflamed and leaves a bumpy, dimpled, otherwise uneven skin surface.

This treatment helps break up old collagen to produce a new even layer of collagen that smoothes out the skin surface.

For General Skin Health

Many people suffer from the same common skin health concerns, such as dry skin, uneven skin tone, and uneven skin texture. This treatment easily addresses these general skin health concerns by increasing the rate of skin cell turnover and helping the skin become self-sufficient in maintaining an even complexion and a smooth, supple, moisturized skin surface.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

In general, patients can begin seeing results as soon as their initial healing stage is completed. Within 1 to 3 days of your treatment, you will notice an immediate improvement to the tone and texture of your skin, most noticeably a health glow to the skin surface. However, sometimes the results you are looking for may take time to emerge. Here are the different times you can expect:

For Anti-Aging

The correction of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and skin laxity usually becomes evident after 3 treatment appointments or even as soon as 3 to 4 weeks after your appointment. You will notice an improvement in the tightness of your skin, which will continue to improve for as long as you have regular treatments.

For Scar Reduction

The reduction of scars may take more time to manifest, largely because smoothing scars takes more effort for the skin. For many patients, it takes 3 to 6 treatment appointments to have a full reduction of scarring. However, between your first appointment and your desired results, you will notice a gradual improvement of the scar texture, usually within 6 to 8 weeks of your first appointment. Your scarring will slowly soften and then fade.

For General Skin Health

Results for general skin health appear the most quickly. After your first appointment, in addition to the immediate results of healthier-looking skin, you will notice an improvement in tone and texture in as little as 7 to 14 days.

What Can You Expect Before, During, and After Treatment?

While this may be a simple treatment, there are still a few steps you should expect along the way. The best way to get the best results is to observe all the guidelines we provide you. Here are some steps you can expect:

Consultation

You will need to attend a consultation appointment so that we may screen you to see if this treatment is right for your skin concerns. We will examine your skin, discuss your skin concerns, and talk about what you can reasonably expect from treatment. We will also gather information from you, including your skincare habits and any previous cosmetic treatments you may have had in the past.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

To help you prepare for treatment, we will provide you with a list of pre-treatment guidelines that you should follow for at least 24 hours before your appointment. Some of these guidelines may include:

  • Discontinue Retinol products
  • Do not use alcohol-based products
  • No sunscreen or make-up
  • Wash your face before the appointment

You will not need to arrange for transportation after your appointment. Please remove all facial jewelry and pull hair away from the face on the day of your appointment.

Treatment Step One: Numbing and Cleansing

We will apply a topical numbing cream to the surface of your skin for about 10 to 20 minutes prior to the start of your treatment. Once your face is sufficiently numb, we will use a gentle cleanser to remove the cream and any excess dirt, oil, or make-up from the skin surface.

Treatment Step Two: Needling

A certified technician will treat your skin by using the needling device, which will create micro punctures along the entire surface of your skin, with the exception of your under-eye area and your lips. The needling is done one section of the skin at a time to make sure all areas are treated equally. When the needling portion is concluded, the technician will cleanse your skin again.

Treatment Step Three: Serum

To wrap up your appointment, we usually apply a serum rich in vitamins to your skin to promote healing and allow your skin to absorb added nutrients. The serum used will depend on your skin needs and will be discussed prior to your appointment.

Post-Treatment Guidelines

We will give you a list of post-treatment guidelines to follow after your appointment. It is important to follow these guidelines closely as your skin will be vulnerable for the first 24 to 72 hours following treatment. Some post-treatment guidelines will include:

  • Do not use any acid or Retinol products
  • Avoid direct sunlight, excess heat, and sweating
  • Do not go swimming
  • Do not wash or scrub the skin

We may provide you with special products to use after your appointment to help your skin recover and to use as part of your skincare routine.

Recovery

The majority of patients are recovered from treatment within 1 to 3 days. There is no extended recovery time associated with this treatment. Provided you take care to follow the post-treatment guidelines and, after 72 hours, wear sunscreen when you are outside, you are free to return to all normal daily activities.

Can You Combine This Treatment?

Yes! There are several treatments that can be combined with this one to help you achieve all of your aesthetic goals.
